Understanding Your Nervous System: A Beginner's Guide
Published on February 15, 2026
Your nervous system is like the operating system of your body. It controls how you respond to stress, whether you feel safe, and how much capacity you have for growth and change.
The Three States
Your nervous system has three main states:
Parasympathetic (Rest & Digest) - This is your calm, grounded state. You can think clearly, be creative, and feel safe. This is where we want to spend most of our time, especially when navigating big transitions.
Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) - Your alarm system. When you sense danger, your nervous system activates to protect you. This is helpful in actual danger, but many of us stay here when we’re stressed or overwhelmed by transitions.
Dorsal Vagal (Shut Down) - Sometimes called the “freeze” response. When overwhelm feels too much, you might disconnect, go numb, or feel stuck.
Why This Matters for Your Transition
When you’re moving through a big life change, your nervous system is often dysregulated. You might feel anxious, stuck, or overwhelmed. You can’t access your wisdom or clarity because your body thinks it’s in danger.
That’s where nervous system work comes in. By learning to regulate your nervous system—to bring yourself back to a calm, grounded state—you create space for real insight and aligned action.
Simple Practices to Ground Yourself
- Feel your feet. Notice where your feet touch the ground. Feel the weight of your body.
- Cold water. Splash your face with cold water or hold ice. Your nervous system recognizes this as safe.
- Slow breathing. Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 6. Longer exhales calm your system.
- Movement. Walking, stretching, or gentle movement helps discharge stress from your body.
- Connection. Time with someone you trust is deeply regulating.
Your nervous system is trainable. The more you practice these practices, the easier it becomes to find calm and clarity when you need it most.
